Thoughts of being Insured

January 29, 2008

“Unlike before, more and more older people know they cannot depend on their children to care for them, and even if the children are willing, very often they just don’t have the financial means to do so as they are poor…” –Lum Kin Tuck (president of the National Council of Senior Citizens Organizations Malaysia (Nacscom), The Star Jan 28th 2008)

I have to admit that it is true. My mum always joke about us not be able to ‘feed’ them comfortably as we are so poor that we cannot call home and had to miss call in order to get them to call back (this is in my studying years, now I do call now… and I don’t have to talk fast fast…). Even though after working for more than half a year, I have to say every month I still struggle to save. And I always thank God that my parents are financially independent.

I don’t know about you, but I always wonder, how my parents did it. They not only raise us well(me, him and him), sponsored our odd activities and leisures, sponsored my higher education with few re-sit papers, few technologies privileges, bless us with shelter in KL and my “Korean boyfriend” , had their cars and house PLUS not needing to worry we cannot feed them… (I think they are more worried about we cannot feed ourselves).

I feel…at this point, if I cannot take care of them financially, I better take care of myself by buying insurance. I cannot imagine if I’m in need of medical attention, I had to go to my parents to ‘take’ what is left for them… mind you, medical fees these days are not cheap…

A more mature and wise lady friend told me this, “I couldn’t save money when I started work too, that’s why I bought insurance… A FEW… At least I know for sure that money will have a return!”

I have friends who say, “Insurance is a must buy thing for everybody, it’s a matter of sooner or later only, plus I no money”. Well, we ALWAYS out of cash, and why later when it can be sooner. It’s cheaper to buy young. Every year delay means an increase of policy price, a later ‘money back’ AND everyday is a risk… why take bigger risk each day?

I have other friends who say, “Insurance? I have one already… but I don’t know what”. Please I urge you go find out what you are covered and what you are not. Don’t cry when you find out what you don’t have when you need them… and one is never enough to cover your valuable life… rate your value compare with your car insurance, which are you paying more?

Never thought I’ll ever blog bout this, because this is one of the ‘fearful topic’ in a conversation. Many people don’t know what insurance really do, they just know they must decline even without finding out what it is

…ANYWAY, I blogged it…I may not be the best person to ask for the best plan for your life. But I do know someone who can. For more info, message me personally.

Senior Mentor No.1 Said

January 28, 2008

“With nothing to do, no purpose in life, you’ll just degrade, go to seed. the human being needs a challenge”- Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s Minister Mentor (the Star, Jan 25, 2008).

He was referring to older citizen “Retirement means death”.

But, I have to say as young as we are even teens or kids. We degrade too. I remembered an eleven- year old girl told me she is so bored living when i was having a chat with her. I asked, “bored? what do you usually do when you have time.?” She answered in a sigh, “nothing much, watch tv, play computer games…urm….get bored…”. I was left speechless…

Jesus said, “…I’ve come to give you life, and life more abundantly…” We are meant to prosper, be excellent and not degrade…

Awaken by thoughts…

January 22, 2008

Went to celebrate my colleagues’ birthday last night. We had a different atmosphere all together compare to our usual lunch time hang out. It was great just to share stories and joke slightly more than usual… had teh ais (pic below with Birthday boy) and here I am awake.

3 days ago, reminded of the question “what make you wake up every morning to do what you do?” caught me thinking again- which I thought I had the answers long ago, but at that point, I didn’t know the answer… I was miserable being disconnected from everything I was in touch with, even my home internet. My whole emotions, thoughts, to do list, directions, source of strength… was just at a low mode…  can’t think, read or do anything- procrastination. YET I got to watch a few good movies from Hallmark. Hiaks!

An hour of mind playing on my bed about my 9am -6pm, my after 6pm, my passion, my heart… got me out from bed and started scribbling on my planner- planning of meetings/ ideas/ decisions that was meant to make and thought over, suddenly just found its answers, pieces of thoughts falls into place… the feeling is great! List down a whole” to do” list. Though it is LONG and stretch of time, I think this is what gets me to wake up each morning as a different person, excited to finish the task that I’m asked to do :)   This list is enough to get me going for a week before I start off with a my next…

What makes you wake up each morning to do what you do?

Got to have a Starbucks!

I personally don’t drink coffee or pay such price for a cup of beverage intentionally…. However, reading about it is different…
My boss passed me this book to read to understand how business works. Truly admirable to see how Starbucks made it happen. Basically the book only said 5 important things, some i already knew, but never applicable or see as realistic… but this book had took me to another level of thoughts, creativity and understanding compare to my 3 years of studying marketing and management that talks alot about change, culture and empowerment plus the 4 Ps  for product and 7 Ps for services. (i can see my marketing friends grinning about this)
 5 Main Principles:
  1.  Make it your own - my boss had been trying to communicate this point to me ever since day 1 i joint him in this company. I’ve been trying and striving to make it “my own”… but it requires more than that… it requires a heart.. in whatever we do, social activities, workplace, ministry, most of all our own life, is our heart in it to go all out? is your life yours? is your relationship with God YOURS?
  2. Everything Matters- nothing is suppose to be swept under the carpet… every small detail matters- not because you are picky or being difficult, but observant bout the process and wanting only excellence.
  3. Surprise and Delight- it’s the feel and experience that people remembers
  4. Embrace resistance- be a listener, embrace change and adaption to culture.
  5. Leave your mark- serving the community and standing to what you believe
I think what i take away most from this book is this that is applicable in my life in all areas- The author phrase it this way, “be welcoming, be genuine, be considerate, be knowledgeable and be involved… to whoever that is in contact with Starbucks me.”
This book is recommended.  Wah! this is the second book i finish this year!! yippie!
